Age Limits & General Eligibility

Age will be calculated as of 01.07.2026.

  • UR Category: 18 to 42 years (born on or after 02.07.1984)

  • OBC Category: 18 to 45 years (born on or after 02.07.1981)

  • SC/ST Category: 18 to 47 years (born on or after 02.07.1979)

Educational Constraint: Candidates must possess the required educational qualifications by the last date of application. Candidates awaiting final results are strictly not eligible to apply.

Selection Process & General Exam Rules

The selection is highly transparent and includes a single-stage Computer Based Test (CBT), followed by, where applicable, a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) or a Typing Skill Test (CBTST), document verification, and a medical examination.

General marking rules for the CBT:

  • Negative Marking: 1/3 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.

  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: UR: 40% | EWS: 40% | OBC (NCL): 30% | SC: 30% | ST: 25%.

Post-wise Exam Pattern

1. Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP)

  • Exam: 120 minutes | 100 questions.

  • Subjects: Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering, and a trade-specific section (approximately 25 questions).

  • CBAT: Shortlisted candidates (8 times the number of vacancies) must achieve a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery. Merit is 50% CBT + 50% CBAT.

2. Station Master, Goods Train Manager, and Junior Account Assistant.

  • Examination: 90 minutes | 120 questions.

  • Subjects: Mathematics (35), General Intelligence and Reasoning (35), General Awareness (50).

  • Additional: CBAT is required for Station Master (70% CBT / 30% CBAT). CBTST is required for Junior Account Assistant (Typing: 30 WPM English / 25 WPM Hindi).

3. Junior Engineer (All departments)

  • Examination: 120 minutes | 150 questions.

  • Subjects: General Awareness (15), Physics and Chemistry (15), Computer Basics (10), Basics of Environment and Pollution Control (10), Technical Abilities (100).

4. Clerk (Commercial, Accounts, Junior Clerk)

  • Exam: 90 minutes | 120 questions (Math 35, Reasoning 35, General Awareness 50).

  • Additional: A typing test is mandatory for Accountant and Junior Clerk positions.

5. Technician (Level 5 and Level 2)

  • Level 5 (Grade I Signal): 90 minutes | 100 questions (General Awareness, Reasoning, Computer, Mathematics, Basic Science, and Engineering).

  • Level 2 (Grade III): 90 minutes | 100 questions (Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science, General Awareness).

Merit Index, Normalization & Tie-Breaking Rules


  • Normalization: Scores will be normalized for the CBT conducted in more than one shift.

  • Merit Index: A common merit index formula will also be applied for candidates from different categories who take the exam but are applying for the same post.

  • Tie-breaker Rule: If marks are equal, the older candidate will be given a higher rank. If age is equal, the rank is determined by the alphabetical order of the name (A to Z).

  • Document Verification (DV): Original certificates are mandatory. The signature and handwriting must be the same in all stages.
